At Exodus Church, we pay close attention to the lyrics of our worship music. Do the lyrics convey right theology? Do they convey it clearly, in a way that is easy to understand? It’s a standard we are passionate about both in the music we bring in from others and in the music we write ourselves.
Our in-house songwriters have an overflowing love for the psalms. The psalms are ancient hymns written mainly by Moses and David and the song leaders of David’s time. We sing several adaptations of those psalms written by our own people. This Sunday we will be introducing a new song written by Alex Kneen. The lyrics, based on Psalm 116, are written below along with a link to the audio.
Psalm 116
I love the Lord
He heard my voice and my cries for mercy
The snares of death encompassed me
In anguish and in suffering I cried
“Oh Lord, deliver me!”
(chorus)
Return, oh my soul, to your rest
Return, oh my soul, to your rest
For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you
Oh, he is good
Oh, he is good
You have saved my soul from death
My eyes from tears and my feet from stumbling
You have loosed my bonds so I will walk
Before the Lord these pilgrim days
What shall I give to the Lord
For all his goodness
I will lift the cup of his salvation
And forever I will offer up a sacrifice of praise
(bridge)
Gracious is the Lord and righteous
Our God, he is merciful
