Introduction

Every Sunday morning we remind ourselves of our mission statement: “Exodus Church seeks to be a redeemed people who worship and serve God in the world.”

As you read through this Summer Recap, we believe that you will find all of the ministries of Exodus Church fulfilling this mission. We are excited to share some highlights that describe what the Lord has accomplished through the people of Exodus during the summer of 2024 and look ahead to the rest of the year.

We hope you are encouraged by this Summer Recap!

MISSIONS

Mission Trips

Between July 27 and August 4, 33 students were sent out on mission trips. The goal of these trips was to work alongside three of Exodus’ church partners: Epiphany Church in Gloucester City, NJ, Strong Tower Church in Montgomery, AL, and Reconcile Church in Greenville, SC. In their time on these trips, students served in a variety of ways, spanning from painting to running a VBS to door-to-door evangelism. Students were greatly impacted by their time serving and came home with a renewed sense of calling to live out the Great Commission where they are.

  • LOOKING AHEAD
One of the most exciting outreach opportunities that we have coming up is Angel Tree in November and December. This is such an important ministry as we spread the love of Christ providing Christmas gifts to local families in need.

EXODUS KIDS

In July, we had four days of Exodus Kids Extreme. The purpose of this annual event is to share the gospel in a clear, compelling, and developmentally appropriate way with children and their families. Throughout the week, we desired for kids and families to see that through faith in Jesus, God turns slaves to sin into kids of the King. Even though Family Night had to move indoors due to rain, we had an exciting week of ministry! This event also provided a great way to celebrate how Lyndsi Valenti and Kelsie Mery have led Exodus Kids over the past several years.
In July, we also welcomed Cassie Taylor as our new Exodus Kids Director. We are excited to welcome her and for the first time, to have a full-time staff membeber devoted to leading Exodus Kids!
  • LOOKING AHEAD
This Sunday, September 8, we will begin a new rotation of volunteers serving on Sunday mornings in Exodus Kids. The beginning of a new rotation is always a great time to get connected and find a place to serve our kids and families, pointing them clearly to Jesus each week!

We are also excited to begin planning a Fall Family Picnic/Hike on Saturday, November 2.

exodus Students

Graduate Recognition

In May, Exodus Students celebrated the graduation of seven students: Brennan Painter, Elea Lowe, Grady Peeler, Kate Hoersch, Macie Jones, Sarah Brown and Violet Tarbutton. They enjoyed a nice dinner and had a special time to honor them and send them out. Leaders prayed over the graduates as they celebrated the end of one season and the beginning of a new one.

Summer Camp

In June, 54 students and 20 leaders spent four days at Camp Awanita to explore what it means to “Run on Joy”. Students spent the week growing in their faith together through worship, the hearing of the word preached and their conversations in small groups. The week was filled with fun games, intentional worship and quality time together.

Fall Kickoff

Exodus Students kicked off for the fall on Wednesday, August 14, with a new layout for their Wednesday night gatherings. All Students begin the night together with a game and worship through song before middle schoolers head to small groups and high schoolers hear a sermon. After this, the students switch spaces as high schoolers head to small groups and middle schoolers listen to the sermon. The school year began with the start of a four-week sermon series titled “On The Run,” which focuses on the life of Jonah. This school year promises to be full of opportunities for Students to grow in their faith.

The WKND

November 8-9

This fall, Exodus Students will host The WKND, an in-house weekend event designed for students to deepen their walk with Christ while enjoying loads of fun with friends. Students won’t want to miss out on this enriching and thrilling weekend experience!

exodus WOMEN

In June, Exodus Women came together for Overboard! and enjoyed a night of swimming, games, and a BBQ dinner with various desserts. After dinner, the women split into teams and played several games. Their favorites were the synchronized swimming competition and the sweatshirt relay, both of which resulted in a great deal of laughter. This event was a wonderful way for the women of Exodus to connect with each other during a very busy summer season.
  • LOOKING AHEAD

Women’s Bible Study

Starting September 16

On September 16, they will begin the fall Bible study, “Remember and Celebrate: A Study of the Feasts of Leviticus 23.” They’ll dive into Old Testament culture and context to see how seven feasts compelled the Israelites to remember and celebrate who God is and what He has done. Then they’ll go to the New Testament to discover how Christ is the full substance and fulfillment of these feasts. They will then determine how each feast can create within them a rhythm of remembering and celebrating who God is and what He has done for each of us in Christ.

Pie Night

November 8

In November, Exodus Women will have their bi-annual Pie Night! This is always a favorite event each spring and fall. They also have a Cookie Exchange planned for December. Both of these events will be excellent opportunities for women to connect in fun and lighthearted environments.

exodus MEN

In June, Exodus Men hosted a Men’s Training Event that focused on what it means to live with intentionality within the context of their families. Pastor Kevin Weisman shared teaching, and men engaged in fruitful discussions shaprening each other as they strive to be great husbands and fathers.
  • LOOKING AHEAD

Tailgate Social

September 21

Exodus Men will be hosting their Tailgate Social on Saturday, September 21, from 5-11:00pm. They will have a wing cook off, lawn games, and a ton of fun watching college football! Any men with sons over the age of 10 are welcome to bring them along. You can still register for this event on Church Center.

Care + Counseling

We are thrilled that the new Care+Counseling webpage was launched to provide information about Care+Counseling at Exodus. While care primarily happens in and through Community Groups at Exodus, if you are in need of care and are not yet connected to a group, please email care@theexoduschurch.org. Additionally, we realize that there are times when someone can benefit from the care and support of a counselor. Whether you need short-term help or a referral for more long-term counseling, please email counseling@theexoduschurch.org to get connected with those resources.

Our second Serve Sunday happened on August 11 and was a great way for the people of Exodus to connect with serve teams and find their part to play. We had over a dozen serve teams represented at the event, and lots of people from the congregation took advantage of this opportunity to learn more about ways to serve. If you happened to miss the event and want to learn more about serving at Exodus, simply email serve@theexoduschurch.org and someone will help you find your part to play!

  • LOOKING AHEAD
This fall we are excited to be offered two Care Groups as part of Equip Nights. The Anxiety Care Group will help women dig into God’s Word to learn how to combat the feelings of fear and anxiety and find peace through trusting the Lord. Additionally, the Grief Care Group will take steps to recover the practice of honest spiritual struggle that gives us permission to vocalize our pain and wrestle with our sorrow by exploring what the Bible says about lament through the Psalms of Lament and the book of Lamentations.

Facilities

  • LOOKING AHEAD
This fall, we anticipate seeing the first signs of progress as we expand our Kids & Students areas. We have two upcoming Mill Workdays scheduled for September 28 and November 16, and we look forward to making significant progress toward improvements in our building. In late November, we will Deck The Mill preparing for Advent.

STAFF

This summer we had the privilege of hosting three summer interns. Anna Gonzales and Harrison Jimenez served as our Exodus Students Summer Interns, and Alex Meade served as Exodus Kids Summer Intern. Our interns did a great job this summer serving our kids and students. Along with their weekly work and learning, they all served and led at Student Summer Camp, Exodus Kids Extreme, and during student mission trips. We are so grateful for their passion and growth this summer, and we are excited to see how God will continue using them for many years to come.

In June, our staff, their families, the lay elders, and interns were invited to spend an afternoon at the Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park in Belmont. Their time was spent hanging out and playing cornhole while eating sub sandwiches and watermelon. The venue was a blessing to all as the kids had access to the playground next to the picnic shelter.

In July, we welcomed Andrea Noles as our new Mobilization Coordinator and Cassie Taylor as our Kids Director. In August, we welcomed Amy Alley on staff as the new Connections Coordinator. These ladies have already been a huge blessing to our staff and congregation.

We recently celebrated several staff anniversaries: Lauren Harris – 2 years, Tyler Boyette, and Josh Grotke – 3 years. We continue to be thankful for a gifted staff of servants who love Jesus and His church.

  • LOOKING AHEAD
This coming fall and winter we will celebrate these staff members: Brittany Kahler – 1 year, Kenneth Gray – 2 years, Scott Harris – 4 years, Alison Smart 8 years, and Brian Lowe – 16 years.

THe ORCHARD INITIATIVE

It’s hard to believe that we are coming to the end of our first round of Orchard Initiative residents as it seems like a short time ago we were talking about purchasing the first two homes on Orchard Street. We have learned a lot from our initial residency, but overall, it has gone better than we could have ever hoped.
David and Emily Gladney have moved to Raleigh to start his work at King’s Table Church. They recently welcomed the birth of their son, Shepherd Rice Gladney. Please continue to pray for them as they get settled and continue serving Jesus in their new assignment.
Kenneth and Whitney Gray are in the process of planting Citizens Church in West Gastonia. Please pray for them as they raise partners and develop their launch team.

Spencer and Nicole Fretwell will also be joining Citizens Church! They will be working on fundraising and many of the initial tasks needed to plant a church. Pray for them as well!

  • LOOKING AHEAD

Our goal is for Exodus to train, develop, and launch pastors and planters to lead faithful and fruitful churches. By God’s grace, we have done that, Exodus. All of us play a part in The Orchard Initiative. Whether you are giving faithfully, serving as a mentor for one of the residents, or simply being a fellow brother or sister to them, you are part of what God is doing in their lives. So, thank you!

And we are not finished! We will begin looking for our next round of residents in October. Our hope is to select these men by February 2025 for a July start date. Please be praying. God knows the men he would have Exodus train, develop, and launch.

FINANCES

We are celebrating God’s faithfulness to provide through the dedication and generosity of His people at Exodus Church.

We realize that there are many ways that you could use your time, talent, and treasure to serve Jesus. We are thankful that you would trust Exodus Church with these resources. We seek to be faithful stewards, operating with purpose and transparency to maximize our Kingdom impact.

COMMUNITY GROUPS

Over the last several months, we were able to see many of our Community Groups in action. In addition to groups studying the Bible together and enjoying fun times, we’ve had several stories of groups stepping in and supporting each other through basement flooding, unexpected health situations, and loss. We are so grateful for the way our people do life together and care for one another.

Many of our Community Groups slowed down over the summer and primarily connected through informal social gatherings. In August, our groups kicked off the rhythm of regular gatherings again with cookouts.

Also in August, the Nolen Farms Community Group, led by Jeremy and Dana LeFevers, launched. Jeremy and Dana are excited to serve God in this way.
  • LOOKING AHEAD

We have 19 Community Groups that meet throughout the week around Gaston County. If you are still looking for your place to belong here at Exodus, we would love to help you find a group. For more information, visit our groups page or email groups@theexoduschurch.org.
