Come Rescue Me

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”  Colossians 3:16

There are times in life where I feel the weight of my guilt and need words to offer my Father in my grief. In the midst of one such struggle,  I picked up my guitar and began to cry out words from scripture through melody from my soul, asking God to rescue me.  I also desired to sing to my own heart the truth, that though my sin and guilt are great and I deserve God’s wrath, Jesus Christ died and rose again, so that those who hope in his name are hidden in him from that wrath.  Not only have I been hidden in him, he will one day present me pure and blameless before the glorious throne with great joy!

Music so often moves words deeper into my own heart so that I remember them.  So, from this experience, I wrote this song.  It does not contain my words. God gave these words to all of us. This song is not only a prayer of lament over our sin, but a reminder that we who have been given faith in Christ have been forgiven; there is none that can bring a charge against us. I hope you find this song encouraging as well!

Here are the lyrics and the scripture references from which they were taken:

If you, Oh Lord, should count our sins who could stand? (Psalm 130:3)
If you, Oh Lord, would hide your face who could live? (Psalm 104:29)
All my sins have overtaken me (Psalm 40:12)
All your waves and breakers wash over me (Psalm 42:7)

Oh God, my God, hide not your face from me (Psalm 143:7)
Forgive me for the sake of your name (Psalm 25:11)
My God you are my only hope (Psalm 62:5)
Come rescue me! (Psalm 31:2)

Who will rescue me from this body of death? (Romans 7:24)
Jesus Christ the righteous, our advocate (1 John 2:1)
You are faithful and just to forgive all our sins
And to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9)

Who is to condemn us? Christ has died to (Romans 8:34)
Save us from the wrath to come (1 Thessalonians 1:10)
He has reconciled us and will present us  (Colossians 1:22)
Blameless before your throne (Jude 24)

Oh God my God how great your steadfast love!  (Psalm 86:13)
You’ve given us the light of your
Glory in the face of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6)
And you have rescued me (Psalm 18:19)
You will rescue me
Come rescue me
